Monday Enrichment - Power Generation for a Reliable Energy Future

Our demand for electricity continues to grow at an ever-increasing rate due to the deployment of new technologies such as electric vehicles, large data centers, and artificial intelligence. Current methods of power generation using fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) have been reliable and contributed significantly to our standard of living. However, they emit carbon dioxide--suspected to be a key contributor to climate change--as well as other harmful pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, mercury, and carbon monoxide. This presentation will explore some alternative technologies being used or under development as part of a diversified energy landscape that, along with fossil fuels, will provide a reliable, sustainable energy infrastructure.

Dale Jones is a graduate of the Univ of Maine, where he received a BS in Engineering Physics in 1974. He then accepted a position at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPPL) operated by GE for the US Navy. At KAPL he qualified as a civilian operator at a nuclear submarine prototype used to train USN submarine crews. After qualifying as an Engineering Officer of the Watch, he remained at the prototype as an operator and instructor. Next he moved to Combustion Engineering Inc (CE), one of the 3 main domestic suppliers of nuclear reactor systems for commercial power generation, where he helped develop and implement nuclear safety system test programs that complied with Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations. Most recently, he has been a project manager for electric distribution in the Chicago metro area.
